Her character Kitty Darling is late 30s minimum, but Helen Morgan was only 29 when she starred as a middle-aged burlesque star whose driving conflict is being washed-up and out of time to accomplish any semblance of a successful Broadway career. She’s doomed from the minute she gives birth and her coworkers form a line around her in a shot resembling people staring at a body at a funeral viewing. Burlesque, or at least the American variation of it seen in the movie, was a type of variety show encompassing parodies of either the upper class or “high art,” circus acts, minstrelsy, musical numbers, and sexualized performance art. Its sister industry, vaudeville, declined in the 1920s due to talent poaching and competition for audience attention from movie theaters. Over the course of its history, especially in the 1910s and '20s, burlesque relied more and more on sex appeal and revealing striptease outfits to draw in crowds. Stage runways, as seen in the movie, came about in the early 20th century so the audience could look at the performers up close. Modern “neo-burlesque” revivals retain the sexuality but attempt to re-emphasize the social commentary and comedy elements while being more inclusive of different ages and body types. The movie details a situation where use of sex appeal for profit generation instead of self-expression results in a narrow youth-obsessed beauty standard. This contributes to both Kitty being thrown to the side and her daughter (possibly because young people are perceived as easier to manipulate) being preyed on by older men.
Much of the narrative tension revolves around whether Kitty’s teenage daughter April will meet a similarly tragic fate in show business. Her presence creates conflict in her daughter’s coming-of-age process despite how she desperately wants the best for her. Normally, this character type would be a domineering force who views her offspring not as a separate human but a chance to vicariously live out her lost youth and failed ambitions. They don’t go that route; instead the main manipulator is Kitty’s boyfriend. She’s a victim of his abuse, but is also so caught up in the fantasy of a happy family she fails to notice him lusting after her daughter. With all the instability in her career and relationships, she struggles to be stable enough to give April the support she needs. It’s often April who’s second-guessing her own major life choices to emotionally support her mother, such as when she rethinks getting married after her mom’s career falls apart because she’s scared for her well-being. Even the sound design argues April shouldn’t follow her mother’s path of trying to make it in the big city. It conveys a chaotic but mechanical and impersonal landscape with its clangs, crashes, and car horns. She may be surrounded by crowds when arriving in New York for the first time, but most people are wrapped up in their own lives or only out to exploit her. The sounds chosen to overlay Kitty’s overdose scene are machinery noise from outside the window (possibly construction work or cars revving) preceded by a ticking clock.
If her mother represents one potential future, another option arises when April falls in love with a sailor who wants to take her back to his Wisconsin farm. The narrative positions settling down and marriage as the safest option for its central women, implying Kitty’s life would’ve been better if, instead of focusing on an independent career, she’d taken up a marriage offer from a coworker who instead disappears from the narrative after the timeskip of April’s childhood in the convent. This life path has risks in its own right, especially since April is 17-18 and considering a marriage to a man she’s known for less than a week. To be fair, there are some interesting ideas raised by the romantic subplot. It gives April a chance to exercise agency. Most of her circumstances have been decided for her, but this is one she made herself–not her mother, not the convent nuns and their peaceful but sheltered environment, and definitely not the abusive potential father-in-law. The scene where she breaks off the engagement and he leaves on a train is also very well-done. It captures the clarity regarding a previously tough decision that arrives precisely after you’ve seemingly irreversibly chosen wrong. I think it’s because she has some semblance of control over this potential relationship that she nearly self-sabotages it. Her mother’s life is falling apart, and April's plan to abandon him to stay with Kitty feels like the only action she can do even if it’s not even helpful or what Kitty wanted. However, the sailor's initial proposal falls flat for me when he singlehandedly decides to marry her or else he’ll jump off a high building. The actors play it as joking banter not meant to be taken super literally, but he’s still prioritizing his own wants over her feelings even if he’s not directly forcing her into anything. In some genres, it’s easier to suspend disbelief about instant romances; fairy tale adaptations, for example, don’t need to be scrutinized according to real-world logic. But in a setting grounded in reality and often cynical, it comes off as her knowing show business will make her miserable and rushing into this as an escape attempt.
The large mechanized city, and especially show business, are portrayed as so fast-moving it’s inevitable people will get left in the dust. The obvious example is Kitty running out of time to succeed in her career, which hampers her mental health and ability to support April despite having more moral integrity than most “stage mother” characters. This also complicates April’s journey of coming of age and deciding what she wants in life. She avoids a stage career, which was her mother’s wish even if she never got to see it happen. The other option was asserting her agency and marrying a man that could make her happy and who she genuinely likes, even if they’ve known each other for a short time and some aspects of the romance subplot have aged poorly. She manages to do the best she can with the circumstances given, leaving her future uncertain but not an unambiguous tragedy like her mother’s.

Baba Anujka, born Ana di Pištonja around 1838, was a Serbian herbalist and self-proclaimed witch who gained notoriety as one of the world’s oldest serial killers.
She was active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was responsible for the deaths of at least 50 people, though some estimates suggest her body count may have been as high as 150. Using her knowledge of herbs and poisons, Baba Anujka prepared lethal concoctions for clients who sought her services, often to rid themselves of unwanted spouses or relatives.
Operating out of her home in the village of Vladimirovac, Serbia, Baba Anujka became known as a "wise woman" who could provide remedies and solutions for all kinds of problems. She claimed her potions were harmless but would offer what she called her "magic water" to those seeking a deadly solution, especially in cases of domestic disputes. These potions were laced with arsenic and other toxic substances and would cause victims to fall ill and die within days, making their deaths appear natural.
Baba Anujka managed to evade detection for decades due to her remote location and the trust placed in her by the locals. However, in 1928, a dissatisfied client reported her to police after the suspicious deaths of two victims. She was arrested and, at the age of 90, was convicted of multiple murders. In 1929, Baba Anujka was sentenced to 15 years in prison, though she was released after serving only eight years due to her advanced age. She died in 1938, shortly after her release.

Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' 1929
"Ain't Misbehavin'" is a 1929 song written by Fats Waller, Harry Brooks and Andy Razaf. Waller recorded the original version that year for Victor Records and also later re-recorded the song for the 1943 film Stormy Weather. In a 1941 interview with Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Fats claimed the song was written while "lodging" in alimony prison, and that is why he was not "misbehaving".
There were six other recordings of the song released in 1929, including versions by Louis Armstrong, Ruth Etting, Gene Austin, and Leo Reisman and His Orchestra. It was also used in the off-Broadway musical Connie's Hot Chocolates.
It has been recorded by many other performers over the years, including Billie Holiday, Eartha Kitt, Ella Fitzgerald, Django Reinhardt, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, and Willie Nelson, to name a few.
The original 1929 recording of "Ain't Misbehavin'" by Fats Waller received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1984, and it was one of fifty recordings selected for inclusion in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2004.
"Ain't Misbehavin'" received a total of 79,6% yes votes!

Honestly, I don't envy anyone who's trying to figure out exactly which elements of Mickey Mouse are and are not in the public domain at the time of this posting. Between poor record keeping, genuinely bizarre publication timing (e.g., Plane Crazy; originally test-screened as a silent cartoon in 1928, re-released with sound in 1929, but for some reason its copyright registration is dated 1930?), and straight up conflicting information (e.g., some of the claims regarding what's in the public domain depend on when one specific promotional poster was distributed, for which different sources give different dates), there's a lot of stuff for which you're basically rolling the dice. It's all going to sort itself out in a year or two, as records are much better from the 1930s onward, but I admire the courage of any author or publisher who's willing to wade into that mess right now.

Vertin's personality and traits based on in-game context.
Contains Spoilers.
Will update when I find more tidbits about our beloved Timekeeper.
Updated: March 15 2024
Vertin sucks at math.
Not much to say here. Although, this is another difference between her and Sonetto, who loves math. I hope they do something with this later because it'd be fun.
Vertin is 16 confirmed
While this isn't a personality trait, I did see some debate about her age since it wasn't officials stated until now and it was assumed through context. Prisoner in the Cave explicitly confirms her age. Vertin became Timekeeper when she was 12 and has been the the TK for the past 4 years.
Vertin is a pianist and a painter.
You can see a piano in the back of her office in the Suitcase by the window. It makes sense in regards to Vertin's musically inclined Arcanum. There's an easel and stool in her office too. She doesn't merely collect art, she creates it. Vertin also owns a camera (official artwork released) too and mentions her photography in the begining, so this isn't new but I thought I should add it.
Vertin's still playful under all her composure.
We know baby Vertin was a little menace, but we can still see a spark of that mischief in her later years. For example, Vertin slapping a fake mustache on Regulus to avoid Sonetto really captures this. We can tell from other characters' voice lines that Vertin will most likely play along with their shenanigans. She'll chirp like a bird in response to Rabies talking about his bird friends (Wilderness interaction). She'll help Sonetto during hide and seek (Wilderness). She watches movies with Eternity and An An Lee. X asks her for help with his projects. Going through her crew's voice lines really paints a better picture of how she interacts with others. The voice lines point to someone playful and curious when she's not in work mode.
Vertin was a gremlin.
Vertin's love language is giving.
We know baby Vertin loved to give gifts to a reluctant Sonetto, but that part of her still exists. She tried to grant everyone's last wishes during the 1929 Storm. We also know she gives Lilya alcohol as a gift upon her return from 1929. She is also very direct. We see her ask people what they want or what can she do for them throughout the story. To expand further, you could say she likes fulfilling people's desires instead of limiting it to material gifts. We can see more of instances of this during the Green Lake event, especially in the way she protects Jessica from the Foundation. She also tried to get Regulus funding for a ship. I love the Suitcase Dad meme, but it's rooted in nuggets of truth.
She was a crappy student, yet she was also a resourceful gremiln. Vertin never liked the institution! Honor student? Top of the class? Never. Teachers are filled with that "Godamnit Vertin" energy toward her too. I hope we see more gremlin energy in the future.
One-sided childhood friends.
Vertin is a collector.
Sonetto and Vertin were desk mates but Sonetto couldn't stand Vertin when they were kids. She even tried to avoid Vertin at times but Vertin persisted with her gifts. We can see this in the hallway scene. Sonetto's about to change routes to avoid Vertin but Vertin called out to her to give her a frog she caught. Kinda funny how Sonetto can't stand Vertin but also can't resist her when they were kids. Vertin and Matilda were actually closer back then. Well, at least until the tear gas incident. Sonetto changed after Vertin was hurt and the rascal wasn't around to bother her. I feel like this tidbit says a lot about Vertin and her influence on people.
Baby Vertin collected rocks, bugs, and frogs. Adult Vertin collects painting and mementos of people she's lost. Things were simpler as a kid.
Vertin is stronger than she looks.
She was a wild child and she's still got it years later. Vertin can run for long periods of time, endure injuries, and climb obstacles. That, and she's still essentially a child solider. We see her hold her own when she needs to fight solo doing stuff like dodging bullets. Sonetto and Matilda also exhibit these freakishly athletic traits, especially Sonetto.
Vertin befriends people in every Era, despite knowing she'll lose them.
Compared to the other children raised by the Foundation, Vertin's traveled the world and witnessed loss in every Era. This opens doors to a whole new set of questions. How did she change over time? How do the Arcanists she recruited before the story treat her? Did she have crushes in previous Eras? Were the oranges just as bitter? Vertin seems to get close to people very easily and doesn't build walls around herself despite the trauma. You'd think someone who's lost so much would stop trying to get close to people, but she doesn't.
Vertin is optimistic.
Even as a child, she was full of hope. It's why she fights for the future and is a core part of her personality. She needs to fight for all those she lost and stop the Storm from taking more lives.
Vertin gets quiet when embarrassed/shy.
She'll blush and fall silent, but she doesn't stammer or go all tsundere. We can see this in voice lines. Sonetto's high praises make her cover her face with her hands. Eternity gets a reaction out of her when she holds her hand. She also blushed when she received surprise smooch and fell silent.
Vertin has a unique scar on her back.
Vertin is a tactile person.
Arcana mentions the scar after Vertin was shot multiple times in the back by Schneider. It's a big scar and new theories about the scar are ongoing and interesting!
In several voice line interactions, Vertin is patting people's heads or holding their hands. Not all her crew mates are on board with it, some seem confused, and others play along. We can also see examples in story like her handing Sonetto a frog while gently grasping her hand or her taking Regulus's hand to lead her into the Suitcase. Here is a post with the evidence to back this claim.
Vertin sucks at arcanum but her deep understanding of arcanum is uncanny.
The story mentions her weak arcanum skills throughout the story. They really want you to remember this. Also, her arcanum didn't manifest until sometime after the break away event but before the events in the prologue. During her stay in the guardhouse, she doubts if she's even an arcanist and mentions her arcanum has yet to manifest, which is wild. Smoltin is fighting with her tiny hands and wit in this chapter. However, in the prologue it's mentioned Vertin's understanding of arcanum and her perception makes her unique amongst arcanists. She's also considered more "rationale" than other arcanists. You can read more about this here.
Vertin is stealthy.
Smoltin sneaks around to play outside. She steals food for herself and the Ring from the Staff Canteen, which has better quality food than what the kids get. This tells me she's done this before. Adult Vertin also sneaks around the Walden to find Schneider. She makes maps, tracks guard routes, and avoids detection since whe was a kid.
Tooth Fairy was one of the few Foundation members who cared about Vertin.
Tooth Fairy is the one who gave Smoltin the toffees (chit chat voicelines). She also covered for Vertin on a few occasions to protect her from punishment. She remembers Vertin faking her illness to skip class, but her bruises and wounds were real. The Foundation does have a few kind hearts that genuinely care about the children. The causes of Vertin's injuries is up to speculation.

Peter Beinart is releasing a book this month titled "Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning." The entire point of the book is permission structure to hate Israel as a Jew. Perhaps this permission structure can be seen in a tweet Beinart posted on January 1, "Our children will ask their children will ask their children what we did while Israel obliterated Gaza. From generation to generation to generation, l'dor v'dor."
My answer would be that Israel has tried to make peace with its Arab neighbors and with Palestinians since Zionism started. That the 1929 pogroms, the 1936-39 massacres, the 1947-1948 war, the 1967 war, the 1973 war, were not started by Israeli actions but by those who wanted to destroy Israel. That Israel tried to make peace with Palestinians during Oslo only to have the Palestinians respond with a horrific terror spree aimed at Jewish civilians. That things were getting better in Gaza in the years before 2023 when Hamas seemed to act as if calm was a good policy, but it was all a scam meant to set the stage for the largest massacre of Jews since Auschwitz. That even during the war Israel did more than any army in history to avoid civilian casualties and to bring aid into a war zone, while Hamas did everything possible to maximize civilian casualties and steal the aid. That even though Israel can say screw them all, we should act like they falsely claim we act - we never will. Because Jewish morality is not subject to the whims of popularity or social media or this year's new interpretation of international law, but on concepts that are timeless.
I would tell them that true bravery is to stand up for what is right when the entire world tells you you are wrong.
Moreover, I would tell my children and grandchildren that the Jewish people are a family, a tribe, a people and a nation. The top priority of every family is to defend themselves first, to save their own lives first. Everyone else's lives are important too - but not as important. Anyone who pretends that the lives of their family is no more important than the lives of those trying to kill them and those cheering on the murderers is either a liar or immensely immoral.
And while families stick together, those who choose to betray the family are outcasts. They can claim to remain part of the family but they know, and the family knows, the truth.
However, the family would welcome them back when they come to their senses and recognize that they made a grievous error.

Home is where my heart is.
Chapter 5: Happy Hotel Table of Contents | Profile
Word Count: 2032
Tumblr media
“—so ladies and gentlemen, I’m opening the first of his kind! A hotel that rehabilitates sinners!”
I give an amused hum looking at the TV then commenting, “Well, isn’t that something, hun?”
“Indeed so. How about we introduce ourselves later, sweetheart?” he mentions somewhat mysteriously holding the small of my back.
“Wow, look at you, perking up all of a sudden,” I said looking at him surprised, but he just raises an eyebrow at me, I shrugged and continued, “Well, you know. You just seem so disinterested in these matters concerning others, especially angels before.”
He laughs and replies, “Well, over the years of toppling overlords, angels seem to be the most troublesome bunch for now. Not to say I’d lose to those pesky flies from heaven.”
I nodded my head finding reason in his explanation. “That’s fair enough. Though, things have changed since you’ve been gone, Al. Even I’m attending those annoying meetings for you,” I complained.
“I apologize, my dear,” he coddled, “I know how fussy you get when you go for long without me.”
I gasped dramatically hand over my chest, “Me? Fussy? Should I mention that you would literally drag down a person that was just talking to me?”
“Oh, please. He was very clearly trying to hit on you, and you’re too nice to even turn them down, sweetheart,” he rebuts rolling his eyes.
“I could’ve handled it myself,” I harrumphed cheekily turning my cheek at him.
“Of course you would have, my darling,” he dismisses me playfully.
I scrunched my face at him which he only responded with a pinch on my nose playfully with a genuine smile on his face. I turn to face some demons who were charging at us, no doubt some of Mammon’s goons who accepted the job for some drugs, I sighed and waved my hand over their figures and watched as water appears and jets them off to the side. Tightening my hands into a fist encasing them in water to drown in, leaving them there.
“See. Very powerful,” I told my husband gesturing at the drowning fools that stopped releasing water bubbles from their mouth.
“Seems like you’ve also been busy for these 7 years apart,” he mentions.
“I’d rather not talk about it,” I glared off the side annoyed.
We appeared on the hill where this hotel that the princess of hell advertised earlier. My heart clenched when I hear her trying to call her mom wondering if Abby did as much when I disappeared so suddenly. She goes inside without noticing us.
Al, being the gentleman he was, knocked on the door first.
“Hel—” slam “—oh” slam
“Pff, you scared the poor thing,” I laughed at him crossing my arms. He pinches my cheek then turns back to the door.
“May I speak now?”
“You may,” she elongates crossing her arms trying to be authoritative making me chuckle at how cute she was.
“Alastor! Pleasure to be meeting you, sweetheart! Quite the pleasure. This is my wife, Miledy,” he introduced the both of us while he walks right in through the door, and continues rapidly, “Excuse our sudden visit but we saw your fiasco at the picture show, and I just couldn’t resist! What a performance! My I haven’t been that entertained since the stock market crash of 1929! Hahaha! So many orphans...”
I raise my eyebrow at him, then realizing he really doesn’t care much for other people’s well-beings if it was our family. I’m pretty sure he misses Abigail to this day.
“Hi, I’m Miledy. Aren’t you the cutest?” I cooed pinching her cheek dotingly. She awkwardly laughs at my actions and waits for me to pull away from which I did, seeing how polite the daughter of hell is. “Sorry about him.”
“Stop. Right. There!” a spear pointed at Alastor making both Charlie and I’s eyes widen at the aggression. “I know your game. I’m not gonna let you hurt anyone here! You pompous, cheesy, talk show shit-lord!”
He laughs drily and moves the spear away, “Dear, I wanted to hurt anyone here... I would have done so already.”
They back away frightened at Alastor’s intimidation the room changing, symbols and shadows flickering in the room while his eyes turned into their infamous stare.
“No! I’m here because I wanted to help!” he exclaimed.
“Say what now?” “Huh?”
“Help!”
I let him do his theatrics while I moved around looking at pictures framed on the wall finding many paintings of the Morningstar family, some probably with their close friends, and many posters of Lilith’s shows.
“So, who’s fish breath over here?”
“I beg your pardon?” I turned to the voice and met eyes with a pink spider sinner adapting a very... voluminous form.
“What’s the deal between you and smiles over there?” he asked jabbing his thumb at Al’s direction.
I just smiled at him and said nothing while the little lady asks, “Wait, you’ve never heard of them before? You’ve been here longer than me.” He shrugs making her continue, “The Radio Demon, The Siren? Two of the most powerful being’s hell has ever seen?”
“Eh, not big on politics,” he gives up slumping back on the couch where I sat next to him, much to his comfort.
“Hmm, I’d like to know how the masses see us,” I mused placing my chin on my hand curiously.
She bites back a groan and explains, “Decades ago, Alastor manifested in Hell, seemingly overnight. He began to topple Overlords who have been dominant for centuries. He and the Siren always worked together, always one without the other. She had the voice that only second to Lilith herself. That kind of raw power had never been harnessed by a mortal soul before. Then, he broadcast their carnage all throughout Hell just so everyone could witness their ability. Sinners started calling him "The Radio Demon" (as lazy as that is). Many have speculated what unimaginable force enabled him to rival our world's most ancient and destructive evils. But one thing's for sure: They’re an unpredictable source of danger, a wicked spirit of mystery, and a violent monster of chaos, the likes of which we can't risk getting involved with unless we want to end up erased!”
“Interesting,” I commented with a grin grazing my eyes over at Alastor.
“You done? He looks like a strawberry pimp,” he laughs looking back the pair.
She huffs then crosses her arms and answers, “Well, I don’t trust him!”
“To be fair, do you trust any man? Any men? Men?” he chides then laughing making the woman glare at her while I just stared at the both of them, my head resting on both my hands now finding their exchange fun.
I appeared beside Al as he waited for Charlie to decide, “Why are you suddenly invested in the princess?”
He shrugs and gives me a lazy grin and answers, “Well, it seems like fun.”
“Rightt,” I drawled out not asking him further, he may be like this in public, but I know he doesn’t do anything unless it favors him.
“Okay, so, Al. You're sketchy as fuck and you clearly see what I'm trying to do here as a joke.” She pauses, “But, I don't. I think everyone deserves a chance to prove they can be better. So, I'm taking your offer to help. On the condition that there be no... tricks or voodoo strings attached.”
“So, it's a deal, then?” he offers holding out his hand to take as the room glowed green and wind blowing past us.
“Nope! No shaking! No deals! I... hmm... As princess of Hell and heir to the throne, I, uh, hereby order that you help with this hotel. For as long as you desire,” she orders politely as Alastor fixes up his hair, “Sound fair?”
“Hmm...  Fair enough!” He hums as he inspects the room.
“Smile, my dear! You know you're never fully dressed without one!” he teases Vaggie wiggling his finger under her chin to annoy her. “So where is your hotel staff?”
“Uh, well-.”
“Ohohoho, you're going to need more than that,” he remarks walking towards the pink spider,  “And what can you do, my effeminate fellow?”
“I can suck your dick!” he offers enthusiastically.
“HAH! No,” Al denies immediately while I gave the spider a harsh glare, a few of my water demons popping out of the ground menacingly making him whimper.
“You know what? I changed my mind!” he states awkwardly trying to save his skin.
“Well, this just won't do!” Al yells summoning his staff, “I suppose I can cash in a few favors to liven things up.”
He conjures up a nice fireplace and lifts up a black blob with a big eye, dropping it to the ground.
“Hi, I'm Niffty! It's nice to meet you! It's been a while since I've made new friends!” he introduces, “Why're you all women? Are there any men here?!  I'm sorry, that's rude. Oooh, man! This place is filthy! It really needs a lady's touch! Which is weird because you're all ladies, no offense.  Oh, my gosh! This is awful!  Nope! Nope! Nope! Nope! Nope!”
When Nifty walks past me I give her a pet on the head with a smile which she enjoyed, as Husker arrives along with a casino table.
“Ah, Husker, my good friend! Glad you could make it!”
“Don't you "Husker" me, you son of a bitch! I was about to win the whole damn pot!” he yells and facepalms when the money disappears.
“Good to see you too!” he replies clearly enjoying annoying Husk.
“What the hell do you want with me this time...?” he sighs defeated.
“My friend, I am doing some charity work, so I took it upon myself to volunteer your services! I hope that's okay!”
“Are you shittin' me?!”
“Hmm... No, I don't think so!”
“You thought it'd be some kind of big fucking riot just to pull me out of nowhere?! You think I'm some kind of fucking clown?!”
“Maybe!”
“I ain't doing no fucking charity job.”
“Well, I figured you would be the perfect face to man the front desk of this fine establishment!” he says summoning a bar, “With your charming smile and welcoming energy, this job was made for you! Don't worry my friend. I can make this more welcoming! ...If you wish.”
Husk stares at the bottle of cheap booze that Al summoned for him and exclaims, “What? You think you can buy me with a wink and some cheap booze?! ...Well, you can!”
Vaggie starts yelling while gesturing at the bar, “Hey, hey! Hey, hey, hey! No! No bar, no alcohol! This is supposed to be a place that discourages sin! Not some kind of mouth…brothel…man cave!”
Angel lunges at her effectively cutting her of and yells “SHUT UP! SHUT! UP! We are keeping this!”
“So, whaddaya think?” Al asks Charlie.
“This is amazing!” she answers happily rubbing her cheeks.
“It's... okay,” vaggie answers less enthusiastically while her arms crossed.
“Hahaha! This is going to be very entertaining!” Al pulls the three of us in and starts his little parody of the song Charlie sang that we listened to earlier.
“Hah! Well, well, well. Look who it is harboring the striped freak! We meet yet again, Alastor!” Sir Pentious greets valiantly making me smile.
Alastor only responds with, “Do I know you?”
He visibly deflates like a balloon and retaliates, “Oh, yes you do! And this time, I have the element of- SURPRISE! Ahaha! I'm so evil!”
With the power in Alastor’s hand he immediately shuts down Sir Pentious’ little parade. Summoning a portal of his black tendrils and smashing the blimp into bits. We watched as it was broken apart and him being thrashed around, making me feel bad for the poor guy.
“...Well, I'm starved! Who wants some Jambalaya? My mother once showed me a wonderful recipe for Jambalaya. In fact, it nearly killed her! Hahaha! You could say the kick was right out of Hell! Ohoho, I'm on a roll! Yes, sir! This is the start of some real changes down here! The game is set! Now... Stay tuned…”

Song of The Day/history of cotton eyed joe
do you want the history of a folk song? dm me or submit an ask and I'll do a full rundown
youtube
"Cotton Eyed Joe" Terry Callier, 1963
As a disclaimer, "Cotton Eyed Joe" is my least favorite American folk song and I'm going to talk about why, and I'm going to talk about why Terry Callier's version is subversive and good.
The Earliest date we have for the song's origins is from 1882 when it was Published in "Diddie, Dumps, and Tot, or, Plantation child-life" by Louise Clark-Pyrnelle. This book is a nostalgic recollection of her childhood as a plantation owner's daughter. She reminisces fondly about slavery, missing the old plantation days. Honestly, some of the quotes within this book are beyond parody, in one sentence she says "... My little book does not pretend to be any defense of slavery" and in the next sentence when referring to the morality of slavery she writes, "there are many pros and cons to that subject", later at the end of the chapter she laments about the forever lost emotional connection between the Masters children and the enslaved people. hate this woman and her little book.
It is also important to note that this book goes out of its way to caricature black people, throughout the book she exaggerates accents and dialects to dehumanize them. This is a recurring theme in early publications of this song. Another early publication of the song comes from Dorothy Scarborough in "On the Trail of negro folk-songs" 1925 who got it from her sister who also learned it on a plantation, in Texas. She writes "This is an authentic slavery-time song" This book, if you can believe it, is remarkably racist and dismissive of black music, even as a more "progressive" songbook of black folk songs.
In 1922, the song's history was documented a bit more extensively by Thomas W. Talley in his book "Negro folk rhymes". He writes that it has "deep roots in black traditional lore". Thomas W. Talley was also just a cool guy in general, this book is one of the first compilations of African American folk songs, and it has been a pioneering book in its field. Even today, this book is still one of the best sources for the history of African American folk songs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, this is a black song. This was a black song whose first wave of popularization was through the caricature of black people to be amusing for white folks. Let's move on to its second wave of popularization.
The song was first recorded in 1927 by "Dykes Magic City Trio" (all white band) then about a week later by Fiddlin' John Carson (white performer) then in 1928 by Pope's Arkansas Mountanaineers (all white band) then in 1929 by Carter Brothers and Son (all white band) and then it wasn't really recorded for a while because of the great depression and the war but the times it was recorded, it was by white people. We know this because it was mostly recorded by John Lomax and despite documenting southern folk songs, he almost went out of his way to avoid recording black people singing them. Then, in 1941, it was recorded by Burl Ives (painfully white).also covered by a few white country singers like Adolph hofner bob willis but I think you get the point. It wasn't until later that year that it would be recorded by a black person, performed by josh white in 1944-45, who covered it as a lullaby.
However, it wouldn't be until the 90s, during its 3rd wave of popularization that it became its most grotesque. "cotton eye joe" was recorded and released by Swedish Eurodance band Rednex in 1995 as a, to paraphrase reviews, 'Way to make fun of backwater southerners'. This song became incredibly popular throughout Europe and in the USA as well, charting as a number-one song in several countries, sometimes for weeks. Not only is this song incredibly classist, it is, whether by omission or deliberately, fundamentally racist, adding to the whitewashing of black folk and minstrelsy of black people. The attitude and humor derived from the Swedish version are the same as the version in 1882 when it was a "classic slave song".
So, why is Terry Callier's version important, why talk about it? Terry Callier's version is the first version of the song that I have heard and it is not a comedy. It isn't meant to be funny. It slows the melody down and draws attention to itself. It's almost a ballad, showcasing Joe as a tragic but mysterious hero, maybe a love song. His voice is angelic as well. Terry Callier once again, subverts expectations and creates something beautiful out of a song that has been so whitewashed and appropriated that no one remembers its tragic origins.

Ok so I have a draft for the pre game events in order, I thought I’d share it even tho some stuff might change a lil;
‘Sillyvision studios’ is founded in 1929 by Henry and Joey
Bendy’s first debut takes place during the same year, in the episode “The Dancing Demon”
Episode is a hit amongst audiences, production kicks off and the studio goes from around 4 employees to over 20
1929-1932 are the studio’s ‘golden era’. Bendy cartoons are at the peak of popularity and financially, the studio is doing great
1932 onwards: Bendy cartoons are being overshadowed by competing studios (eg: Disney) and the Great Depression is having a toll on the studios economic status. Production resumes but with far less episodes being released and the amount of employees slowly decreasing.
Joey notices this issue and tries to come up with a way to draw the public’s attention back to the bendy cartoons. Long story short he gets into some cult business. Henry leaves the studio around this time when he notices that joeys going a little crazy with this idea of his.
1932-1934: Bendy cult is responsible for killing some employees for their rituals, although the public is unaware of their existence or the killings as killings were falsely labeled as ‘disappearances’ and members of the cult still acted like normal citizens/employees when not partaking in rituals. The Employees who were killed by cult will find themselves reborn in the toon realm (Eg: Susie and Norman)
1934: Joey manages to bring ‘bendy’ to life. He organizes an event at a large nearby theater to show bendy to the public, Joeys plan to bring people’s attention back worked as headlines and public discourse spread.
Event takes place, Joey realizes that something is off about bendy. (Writing is kinda dookie but u can get the idea I have in my head)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After this event, Joey visits henry and asks him for a book he lended to him that contained details about the curse (Henry has no knowledge of anything and gives it to him). This curse will keep bendy trapped in the toon realm unless broken.
Joey manages to banish bendy to the toon realm, and burns the book afterwards, however this leads to his demise as the cult soon find out about what happened and murder him for betraying them.
Few days later, Investigation takes place after Joey is reported missing. They don’t find his body and the cult is nowhere to be seen. This is because they’ve hid away in the toon realm and taken his body with them.
After this event, studio is completely abandoned, and has become something of local folklore. Twisted bendy corrupts any bendy episodes that were still airing and some of those archived on film reels. Filling them with cryptic messages and disturbing imagery.
One day, bendy tells the cult that he wishes to break the curse and enter the real world so that he can punish humanity for giving him life, but doesn’t know how
One of the cult members tells him that he remembers seeing Joey asking Henry for a book before the event happened, he suggests that he might be able to break the curse.
One day, Henry receives a letter supposedly from Joey, although this is falsely written by the cult to trick him to come and find him at the studio.
Game happens
Again this is not completely final and a bit simplified, so things are open to change, hopefully u guys like it so far and I’m super open to suggestions :] 🖋

Tom Seidmann Freud (1892-1930)
Tom Seidmann Freud, nee Martha Freud, a children's book illustrator and author celebrated for her deceptively simple yet modern style. An eccentric niece of Sigmund Freud, she was born in Vienna in 1892 and moved with her family nine years later to Berlin. She was an artistically gifted child, at fifteen changed her name to Tom (allegedly to avoid sexism she might encounter as a female artist). She eventually studied art, first in London and then in Berlin and in Munich, where she focused on Art Nouveau illustration.
From 1914 to her death at thirty-eight in 1930, she published nearly a dozen books of her own and contributed illustrations to others. Today, nearly one hundred years late, her artwork looks surprisingly contemporary with its simple, folk art aesthetic and fantastical story lines about rabbit words, talking fish, and magic boats. Her illustrations are childish but not babyish, and surreal while also being thoughtful and narrative.
Strikingly fresh in its day, Seidmann-Freud's work was an example of how seriously people took children's literature as an art form. While Seidmann-Freud wrote, and illustrated her own stories, she also illustrated classical fairy tales, such as those by Brothers Rimm and Hanns Christian Andersen, in her Ten Tales for Children. She released her most well-known children's book, Die Fishreise (The Fish's Journey), in 1923.
Seidmann-Freud created her illustrations using the ancient pochoir technique that was experiencing a revival. She drew the figures, foreground, and background with ink and then overlaid watercolors using stencils. Seidmann-Freud experimented with several different kinds of children's books, including ABC books, songbooks, game books, and movable books such as Das Wunderhaus (The House of Wonders, 1927) and Das Zauberboot (The Magic Boat, 1929), subtitled "a book to Turn and Move." She also produced a series of counting books known for their typographical innovation, one of which was chosen for the Museum of Modern art's 2012 exhibition Century of the child: Growing by Design, 19000-2000, in New York.
In the early 1920s, she and her husband, writer and journalist Jakob Seidmann, founded publishing house Perergrin Verlag in Berlin. It was named after the main character in The Fish's Journey, who seeks to overcome his outsider status by escaping to a dreamlike utopia. Tragically, the demise of their publishing venture in the wake of 1929 global financial collapse led to her husband's suicide, and in 1930, to her own. (Their seven-year-old daughter, Angela, went to live with Tom's sister, the actress Lily Freud, and her husband in Hamburg, before they all moved to Prague in 1939. Angela, (Aviva) emigrated to Israel just before the outbreak if Word War II).
Seidmann-Freud died the same year that the liberal democracy in Germany, the Weimar Republic, started its frenzied downward descent. Until Hitler took dictatorial control in 1933, her work continued to receive accolades from her peers, including the legendary literary critic and philosopher Walter Benjamin. Because she was Jewish, however, by 1933 her books began to disappear.
Despite the Nazis destruction of "suspect" literature, and her untimely death, copies of her innovative children's books have survived as an important part of the history of avant-garde book-making in twentieth century Europe.

A Different Perspective on the Warners' Ages
The actual age of the Warners has long been a topic of debate. Are they more children or are they more 90-year-olds? Some mixture of the two? My actual opinion has always been some mixture. They are physically and mentally children, but with 90+ years of life experience in their children brains.
Tumblr media
But then I got thinking about it. Do they have 90+ years of life experience? For the vast majority of that time, they were either locked in a tower or in suspended animation. Is time spent in a possibly dark and empty tower really valuable as a life experience? Are they gaining any practical knowledge, are they learning anything, are they developing? Or are they just static?
Even if the tower has fun stuff in it, they're not really gaining much from riding a rollercoaster over and over again. They're not experiencing the world. They're not building up the experience that any other 90-year-old would have. If you take three human children and lock them up in a room until they're adults, they're not gonna come out of there acting like adults. They will still be children for all intents and purposes in their heads. They didn't develop.
If you only count the time the Warners were out of the tower, as far as them getting practical life experience and "aging" in a mental sense, then the picture changes significantly. They were created in 1929 and locked in the tower in 1934. That means they had 5 years of true life experience when they were locked away. They escaped for brief periods over the next 60 years, for a couple of weeks at a time at most. Maybe we can add a year for all those experiences total?
Tumblr media
So, by the time they escaped from the tower in 1993, they were mentally 6. They were out and about until 1998 or 1999 if you go up to the time Wakko's Wish was released. That's 6 more years at most. When they were put in suspended animation, they were mentally 12.
They came back in 2020 and were around for 3 more years. This means that, at the beginning of the reboot, they were mentally 12, and by the end, they were mentally 15.
Tumblr media
I think these numbers actually line up pretty well with how the Warners act in the reboot and how they seemed to develop both in the original series and the 2020 series. They were more like crazy children in the first episodes in the early 90's, became a little more grounded and cynical as that series went on, and act more like adults or teens in the reboot than they did before.
I'm not saying this was some intentional deep worldbuilding on the part of the writers. I'm just saying it makes sense.

The Mickey Mouse what's public is a little confusing.
You see Steamboat Willie was the 3rd Mickey Mouse short made by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, but the first widely released.
The first made was Plane Crazy, which was first made as a silent cartoon and was screened for a test audience in May 1928. Results were good so Walt copyrighted the movie as a silent, but no distributor wanted it.
Second was The Gallopin' Gaucho which was finished again as a silent short in August 1928.
However, Disney really wanted to make a cartoon with fully synchronized sound, ground breaking at the time. So The Gallopin' Gaucho was shelved and never released as a silent film.
In November 1928 Steamboat Willie was released widely as one of the first with synchronized sound which made it wildly popular and put Disney on the map.
The Gallopin' Gaucho was released, now with sound at the very end of December 1928, but the copyright wasn't filed till after new years, so technically its a 1929 release even though it was finished in 1928 and even released on the last day of 1928. So its copyright is good till next year.
Disney then released the 3rd Mickey short (4th made) The Barn Dance in March 1929.
Finally also in March 1929 Plane Crazy, the first Mickey short ever made was released to a wide audience now with sound, making it the 4th Mickey cartoon released even though it was the first ever made.
So what's public? well clearly Steamboat Willie, however because they copyrighted it, the original silent version of Plane Crazy is also public, however the later wide released with sound version is still under copyright till next year.

Heroes & Villains The DC Animated Universe - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Circe
A powerful and immortal sorceress from the era of myth, Circe resided on a remote island where she enjoyed luring in unsuspecting sailors and transforming them into animals.  Her cruelty earned the attention of the Amazonian queen, Hippolyta, who had the Circe banished to the neither realm of Tartarus.
Countless years later, Circe was released from Tartarus and found herself in the modern era of man.  She used her magic to fulfill her dream of owning and headlining a celebrated cabaret.  Furthermore, she took her revenge on Hippolyta by transforming her daughter, Wonder Woman into a pig.
Batman and Zatana searched high and low for the piglet version of their comrade as well as some means of transforming her back.  In the end, Batman forged a bargain with Circe: the sorceress would undo her spell if Batman agreed to forsake his dignity and perform a song at her cabaret.  Batman’s stirring rendition of the 1929 song ‘Am I Blue’ so moved Circe that she gladly fulfilled her end and Wonder Woman was transformed back into her original self.
Actress Rachel York provided the voice for Circe, featuring in the fifth episode of the first season of Justice League Unlimited, ‘This Little Piggy.’

[CN] Li Zeyan’s Metropolis Date (Eng Translation)
⌚Warning⌚ This post contains detailed spoilers for a date, 都会之约, that is yet to be released on the global server! ♡
Tumblr media
[Translation under the cut]
•─────⋅◍♡◍⋅─────•
【Subbed Video】
youtube
──────────
【Important Notes】
some of you might already know this, especially those of you who follow my translations, but still gonna explain since it’s the pivotal point of this date 🤭
The term “哥哥” (gēge) literally translates to “elder brother”, you might be more familiar with the Korean or Japanese alternatives of this term (oppa/ onii-chan). if not used to address your own elder brother, you wouldn’t dare to use it with just anyone – so, when a Chinese girl addresses a boy as her “gege”, she’d use it to address sb she has a very close/ intimate relationship with, address her boyfriend, or take the leap and address a guy she has a crush on to be cutesy LOL. which is why the use of “gege” in this date is so multifaceted — the term which was initially used as a courtesy becomes a “barrier” in fear of being “friend-zoned”, but makes come back in the parts when used by MC’s friends to tease her or when MC hesitates to address him as “gege” in private b/c of the crush connotation haha.
✦ the use of “gege” with the connotation of boyfriend/ crush prevails in the canon verse too, MC used to address Li Zeyan by this term when they were little and after the first comeback, we’ve had MC use this term many times in the past years: ♡
setting and timeline:
the present day story takes place in New York, around 1925/27, and before the great depression (1929).
──────────────────────────────────────────────────
【Chapter 1】
Tumblr media
Hubbubs of laughter intermittently resonate from the stretch convertible as it glides through the night, weaving through the distant and nearby lights before coming to a halt in the front courtyard of the mansion.
Myself and a few female friends of mine, slightly tipsy and carrying a faint scent of alcohol, support the ornate headpieces wobbling on our heads as we step down from the car, laughing and playfully nudging one another.
Female Friend: Can you believe Jennifer actually invited that actor! Seriously, when our eyes met, I was practically drowning in those eyes; I didn’t even hear a word he said…
Thinking back to that man whose words were dripped with flattery, I lazily let out a yawn.
MC: Enough, Louise. Perhaps your brain is just filtering out those unpleasant bits of news, you know?
MC: He should thank his lucky stars for starring in a silent movie; otherwise, no one would buy into his performance.
MC: If it weren’t for Jennifer, the editor-in-chief, insisting, I wouldn’t even want to mention his name in the article chronicling tonight’s nightlife… it’s just a waste of space for another line.
Amidst the laughter of the girls, I suddenly seem to feel a certain gaze on me. I stop talking and turn my eyes in the direction of home. Sure enough, I spot a familiar figure.
Tumblr media
With one hand resting on the marble railing of the terrace, Li Zeyan looks in my direction, his eyes lowered. The light outlines his physique, carving out a slender silhouette.
Through the thick darkness of the night, those somber eyes lock with mine for a moment. Then, he turns and walks into the villa.
Female Friend: Would you look at that, your old-fashioned gege is still awake at this hour… Could he be waiting for you?
I receive a teasing elbow nudge from my friend, but I offer no retort.
“Old-fashioned.” That term does seem to match him quite well.
In this era where there is never any shortage of merrymaking, he rarely makes appearances at gatherings like banquets and social clubs.
Tonight, before heading out, I asked him if he would like to accompany me, and unsurprisingly, I was met with a rejection.
───── [FLASHBACK STARTS] ─────
LZY: No, I have no intention of attending.
LZY: It’s not that I have any other rendezvous to make an appearance at, but I do have more pressing matters to take care of.
LZY: You go ahead, but don’t stay out too late.
───── [FLASHBACK ENDS] ─────
Perhaps he does have something else he’s really eager to pursue, or perhaps he simply wants to steer clear of certain people… who knows?
Reflecting on the unexplained decrease in our interactions since becoming adults, a hint of melancholy suddenly settles into my heart. I press my lips together, incline my head, and speak nonchalantly as if unaffected.
MC: [blushing]  It isn’t something worth caring about, is it? Anyway, he’s not my “real gege”...
──────────
Tumblr media
Creak—
The sound of the gate slowly being pushed open rings out in my ears. I turn my head and see Li Zeyan behind the door, quietly arching an eyebrow. Undoubtedly, he has heard what I just said.
A flicker of guilt passes through me. Aware of my companions’ fixed gazes behind me, I walk into the house with my chest held high, close the door behind me, and walk past Li Zeyan.
LZY: Had a good time?
MC: Oh, it was pretty good… the atmosphere at the whole banquet was quite lively.
MC: Jennifer also showed us the new gemstone she recently bought. It was so… sparkling!
I nonchalantly remove my gloves and fling them onto the sofa, envy in my eyes as I raise my hands to gesture an approximate size in front of Li Zeyan. A light chuckle reaches my ears.
Tumblr media
LZY: If you fancy it, you can expect to receive an even finer one in the future.
MC: [blushing] I wish, but the qualities of the gemstones in New York in recent times have been really unappealing.
Li Zeyan’s eyes travel over my absent-mindedly pursed lips, but he doesn’t comment on anything. Instead, he simply taps his fingertips on the staircase railing rhythmically.
The air lapses into silence again, with only the swaying shadows of the trees playing on the floor of the hall. I stifle a yawn and walk past him as if nothing has happened.
MC: Alright, I’m going to go and hit the hay in my room. Tomorrow, there’s still…
LZY: MC.
Suddenly, a low whisper reaches my ears from behind. My hand gripping the railing pauses, and I stand on the stairs, turning to look back at Li Zeyan.
His intense gaze bores deep into me, and the emotions in his deep-set eyes appear more complex and difficult to discern than at any time in the past. After a moment, he finally speaks.
LZY: There’s something I believe I need to tell you.
LZY: Next week, I’ll be moving away from home.
MC: …
My lips part, and my heart suddenly pauses for one beat. My eyes wander over his face, trying to find any hint of jest in his words.
Did he say this in a fit of pique because of what I said earlier? But he’s clearly not the kind of person to behave like this…
While I stare at him with bewilderment and helplessness, Li Zeyan offers me no additional explanation. His brooding eyes trace over the intentionally rolled-up hem of my skirt before resting on my face.
LZY: Your father is waiting for us in the living room.
LZY: Come over after you’ve changed your clothes.
•─────⋅◍♡◍⋅─────•
【Chapter 2】
I rush back to my room at lightning speed and take off the intricate and ornate feather headpiece from my head.
After changing into a dress that won’t elicit resigned criticism from my father, I head down the stairs in the direction of the living room, my mind in turmoil.
The sparkling crystal chandelier bathes the spacious room ahead in bright light. From a distance, I can hear the sound of gratified laughter, intermingled with my father’s heartfelt sighs.
MC’s Father: …Zeyan, don’t ever speak such words. If the disaster of that year had befallen me, your parents would have made the same choice.
MC’s Father: I remember when you first came to this home, MC was only five years old–– clinging to you all the time like a piece of sticky candy, oblivious to day and night. [1]
MC: Why is it that the moment I step in, I hear you speaking ill of me~
I walk over to my father and give him a kiss on the cheek, then take my seat next to Li Zeyan naturally.
He holds my gaze briefly before averting his eyes, but his tone carries a subtle softness that is almost imperceptible.
Tumblr media
LZY: She was no bother. If anything, I find myself missing those times, too.
LZY: A plate of cookies was all she needed, and she’d joyfully sit by my desk, reading storybooks with me all night long.
MC: …I also really liked gege back then. No matter the time, you were always there to accompany me.
My father laughs, a wistful expression on his face. I also lift the corners of my lips to match the atmosphere, but my gaze lingers inquisitively on Li Zeyan’s elegant side profile.
Leaving… why did he have this idea all of a sudden?
I used to believe that no matter how much time elapsed… he would naturally remain by my side as a matter of course.
But this decision that came like a bolt from the blue seems to be telling me that I’m the only one who thought that way.
LZY: Yes, I’ve been keeping an eye on a promising aviation company. Their airplanes…
LZY: A number of stocks I acquired in the past few years have yielded good profits. After liquidating, my plans for the next steps include…
A baritone voice resounds from the seat next to me. Li Zeyan is recounting eloquently, seemingly answering some questions from my father, but I can’t pay attention in the slightest.
MC’s Father: …MC, won’t you raise a glass to your gege’s future?
My lower leg under the long table is gently touched, snapping me back to reality. I glance over to see Li Zeyan leisurely leaning back in his chair, his leather shoe brushing past me.
The brief touch just now was probably just an inadvertent act since he was shifting his sitting posture. However, it brings my attention to the fact that I’ve been staring at him for quite some time.
I let out a cough as an afterthought and quickly glance at my father.
MC: My apologies, I was a little lost in my thoughts just now, so…
MC’s Father: Of course, I am just as reluctant to part with him as you are… but I’m confident that when the time is right, Zeyan will come back to visit us.
This matter-of-fact comforting solace sweeps over my heart, gently veiling a certain “expectation” that I have never voiced.
An indescribable sourness swells within me. I raise my wine glass towards Li Zeyan beside me, wearing the same naive and coquettish smile as usual.
Tumblr media
MC: …gege, here’s to every expectation of yours turning into reality.
Li Zeyan lowers his eyes, his slender fingertips promptly picking up a goblet glass from the table. Then, he leans in slightly towards me.
Accompanied by the soft clink of glasses, his deep and low voice resonates in my ears.
LZY: Thank you. I really like this toast.
LZY: I’ll turn these words into reality.
──────────
Tumblr media
The moonlight behind the floor-to-ceiling windows filters through the sheer curtains, casting long and slender beams. I toss and turn on the soft bed for a long time before finally sitting up.
…Even if everything seems to be set in stone, I still want to fight for that last shred of possibility to make this man stay.
It’s very late at night, and the corridor is empty and quiet. I tread lightly past the door of my father’s room, then head briskly towards Li Zeyan’s room at the end of the corridor.
Tumblr media
From a distance, I can see a sliver of light escaping from the room–– to my surprise, his door is only partially closed.
A soft meow reaches my ears. Holding my breath, I watch Li Zeyan seated on the sofa, comforting Betty, whose hind paws are entangled in a ball of yarn.
He cradles it in his arms with one hand, and his well-defined hand trails down the cat’s back, with a touch just right that is neither too firm nor too gentle, preventing its struggling attempts.
His fingertips swiftly probe into the entangled mess of threads. With a few simple movements, the trapped paws are liberated.
Betty: Meow~
Betty purrs contentedly, nuzzling its head against Li Zeyan’s shoulder. His eyes also seem to be dyed with a subtle smile.
The familiar scene overlaps with memories of the past, and suddenly, I feel a little dazed.
───── [FLASHBACK STARTS] ─────
Under the ardent daylight, the greenery in the courtyard stretched ponderously.
The doors and windows lining both sides of the mansion had been opened early in the morning, allowing the summer breeze to weave through unhindered, bringing with it a touch of rare, refreshing coolness.
I was huffing in anger as I strode down the corridor, heading towards Li Zeyan’s room in the most familiar manner, intending to “interrogate” him.
MC: GEGE! Did you stop…
Tumblr media
I walked into his room, only to find a profound silence all around. Li Zeyan was lying on the sofa with his eyes closed and seemed to have drifted off to sleep.
Perhaps to block the dancing spots of dazzling sunlight, he casually rested the back of his left hand on his forehead, casting a gentle shadow over his eyelids.
His slender legs were rarely in such a relaxed posture, crossing casually. The business book in his hand had slipped to the floor at some point; its pages were blown by the breeze, producing a rustling sound.
Without realizing it, I lightened my steps and walked to the side of the sofa. I gazed at his dark strands of hair cascading down, gently resting on the prominent bridge of his nose.
Perhaps it was the light, but I suddenly noticed that there seemed to be some subtle changes on this face that I saw day and night.
Had his jawline become sharper? Or perhaps the knuckles of his hands seemed a little more pronounced? I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
I could only feel my heartbeat accelerating for no apparent reason, as though something that had been overlooked for a long time was now breaking through the surface.
As if drawn by an inexplicable attraction, I involuntarily leaned down towards him, wanting to touch his cheek.
The next moment, I saw Li Zeyan suddenly open his eyes and lift his hand to clasp my wrist.
Tumblr media
LZY: You…
He spoke in a low voice, his tone still carrying a hint of drowsiness. It seemed he regarded everything to be a dream.
His eyes took on a softer expression, and the hold of his palm on my hand did not loosen. Instead, he drew me even closer to him.
His breath caressed my face, and I could almost see my own reflection in his eyes. It was like almost in the next second, we would–––
MC’s Father: Where did you run off to… Betty?
My father’s inquiring voice suddenly echoed from a distance, akin to a pebble thrown into a lake, shattering the interplay of light and shadows before me.
Li Zeyan was frozen for a moment, and then a clarity flashed in his eyes as if finally waking up. He let go of my wrist. Suppressing the ineffable emotions in my heart, I swiftly distanced myself slightly.
Tumblr media
LZY: …Why did you come in out of the blue?
MC: …the door was already ajar, and I didn’t know you were sleeping…
I muttered softly, but then I suddenly recalled something, my voice gaining a touch of confidence.
MC: I also have a question to ask. When James checked with you about whether I was available for a trip to the island next week, why did you reject him on my behalf?
Li Zeyan didn’t respond right away; he lowered his hand and picked up the rumpled book from the carpet.
LZY: Your father mentioned we have to go to the horse ranch next week; looks like you forgot.
LZY: Besides, there is no need to get involved with a guy whose family business is going downhill, yet he still dates a different girl every week.
MC: [girlie is stumped and flushed haha]  But before this, you said about Oren that he was secretly lingering in underground bars!
Li Zeyan calmly flipped open a page, not making eye contact with me.
Tumblr media
LZY: [HEAVENS THE WAY HIS TONE DROPS HERE] I’m simply stating the facts. Besides, you’ll have better choices.
MC: Like who?
In my frustration, I kept pushing for an answer, but then, the air suddenly lapsed into silence, and Li Zeyan’s fingertips also came to a pause.
My heart suddenly began racing by a few beats, and I stood up from the sofa in an attempt to conceal myself.
Tumblr media
MC: …anyway, I won’t allow you to interfere in this matter anymore!
In a rush, I walked towards the door as I spoke. But suddenly, I heard Li Zeyan calling out my name.
I turned around. The daylight outside the window had already transformed into the fading colors of twilight, and with that light falling on his back, I heard him speak.
LZY: I will give you that answer in the future.
LZY: Until then, don’t barge into my room unannounced like this again.

[Tidbits]:
[1] MC’s dad mentions a specific type of candy here (牛皮糖 - nǚpítáng), which is made from sugar and sesame seeds; and has a chewy and sticky texture.

【Chapter 3】
LZY: Come on inside, I haven’t locked the door.
Li Zeyan’s voice suddenly transmits from the room. I snap back to reality, only to realize that my hand, which I raised to knock, has been hanging in mid-air for quite some time.
Tightening my lips, I calmly walk into the room and seat myself next to him on the sofa, my eyes scanning the room.
In the long time that followed afterward, I have refrained from setting foot in this room again. In stark contrast to my memories, the surroundings appear conspicuously emptier.
In one corner of the room, a leather suitcase lay open… the realization of the fact that this person is leaving suddenly becomes palpable.
LZY: You’re here at this hour; is something wrong?
Tumblr media
MC: [blushing]  …you can’t leave!
Two voices collide in unison. Before I can even register the situation, I have already grabbed hold of his hand.
LZY: …
The hazy lighting interweaves with the moonlight, and something seems to flash across Li Zeyan’s expression for a brief moment.
A searing warmth transmits from his palm, and in belated realization, I draw back my fingertips. However, I feel my hand being discreetly clasped, as if he is unwilling to let me escape.
LZY: What’s your reason for saying that?
Tumblr media
MC: It’s not for any reason. I just want… gege to always remain by my side.
Even though it has been a long time since I have addressed him by that term when we are alone with each other, I still purposely soften my tone. I can’t help but expect that Li Zeyan would, just like in our childhood, give me that helpless glance and yield to my coquettish demands.
A silence hangs in the air as Li Zeyan lowers his gaze to mine. In the next moment, his palm enveloping my wrist loosens ever so slightly.
LZY: MC, I am not the same as the toys you wanted when we were little.
LZY: Just the word that you “want” this is not a reason enough to sway me.
I’m slightly stumped and speak without thinking.
MC: But we’ve been living a good life for all this time, haven’t we?
MC: We have the ancestral estates and assets, a steady stream of income… I don’t understand why you’d want to make any changes.
Li Zeyan lets out a very soft chuckle and tilts his head towards the window.
The lights of the distant structures shimmer brightly, reminiscent of a flowing banquet in the boundless night. They reflect in his eyes, exuding a mix of pride and ambition.
LZY: There is nothing in this world that remains unchanged forever, MC.
LZY: Even the prosperity that you indulge in today began after the soldiers returned from the European battlefield.
LZY: Everything we see now was beyond imagination just a few years ago.
LZY: This era can sweep away all outdated existence, and at the same time, it can also give people everything they desire… as long as they can grab hold of it.
Li Zeyan shifts his gaze back to me as he says this. Even though his tone seems to be gentler than usual, it also carries a hint of unswerving determination.
LZY: So, I had already made this decision a long time ago.
MC: …when?
Did it stem from the day he made his first profit in the stock market, relying on his own business acumen? Or was it when he caught the wind of the other “old money” people gossiping about him? Or perhaps it was even earlier?
In a state of bewilderment and urgency, I await a response, but Li Zeyan doesn’t answer my question. Instead, he just gazes at me fixedly, leaning slightly in my direction.
The tranquil glow of the lights paints his eyelashes, and my heart pounds wildly as I watch Li Zeyan approach. He lifts his hand, tucking a strand of hair that was lingering by my cheek behind my ear––
–– like an explanation, or perhaps a reassuring promise.
Tumblr media
LZY: [in the most tender tone possible x1]  I am so happy that you’re here to persuade me to stay.
LZY: [x2]  But, there are certain things I want that I can only obtain by leaving.

Tumblr media
Jennifer: Alright, honey, I’m not here to rush you about the manuscript or anything, even though that special column you promised me has been overdue for a solid three weeks~
My friend’s teasing reaches me through the light fabric. I pull down the covers sullenly, glancing at the blonde girl sitting at the edge of the bed.
MC: Once I’m back in the writing zone, I’ll submit it to the magazine first thing… but, setting that aside, did you manage to find out any news about him?
Even though I don’t explicitly utter Li Zeyan’s name, Jennifer shrugs her shoulders.
Jennifer: You know, your gege rarely attends any banquets within the circle.
Jennifer: I’ve been making discreet inquiries on the airline side, but all I’ve found is that there’s this new guy named Victor, whose company has become a rising star in the industry… but it doesn’t seem to have any connections with him.
[T/N]: Yes, his writers are using his EN name “Victor” as his pseudonym 😂😂
I press my lips together, thinking back to the day Li Zeyan left and how I was so angry that I refused to see him for one last time.
If only I had known earlier, I would have abandoned those inexplicable emotions, opened the door, and had a few words with him.
Jennifer: I have an idea. What if we were to spread the word that you’re planning to hold a banquet at the estate next month to reveal the person you’ve chosen to be your fiancé?
Jennifer: If he does have the intention toward you, there is no way he will able to keep it hidden.
I blink. This suggestion sends a few ripples through my heart–– daring as it is, it might be the most effective method.
With my tacit approval, this piece of news spreads from the mansion along with Jennifer’s departure, gradually circulating from one banquet to another.
Half a month slips away rapidly, yet I still don’t hear any updates. The day of the banquet approaches amidst apprehension and anticipation.

Tumblr media
Large swaths of Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium orchids embellish various corners of the entire property, delicate and beautiful. Under the crystal chandeliers, the elegant fragrance of the flowers intermingle with the intense scent of perfumes, pervading the air.
With a smile, I express thanks or greetings to those who approach to congratulate me in pairs or groups, but my eyes continue to search for that figure I’ve been waiting for amidst the passing crowd.
Suddenly, a figure in a suit and leather shoes blocks my sight. A tall man walks over, raising his glass in a toast toward me.
Man: I’m Adam Arnott, a classmate of Jennifer’s from the academy.
The surname makes me realize that he hails from another wealthy family. I nod politely. However, the man shows no intention of leaving.
Man: I heard from Jennifer that you have a column in her magazine? Honestly, I find that quite impressive.
Man: In terms of killing time, it’s much more meaningful than being obsessed about choosing jewelry. Perhaps we can chat more…
Despite his courteous choice of words, the subtle condescension in his language leaves me agitated. I turn sideways with indifference, picking up a cupcake.
MC: Allow me to correct you. I don’t consider it as “something to kill time.” Had you read my articles, you wouldn’t have had that kind of judgment.
Man: Miss MC, you surely do not treat it as some serious work, do you? Forgive my bluntness, but it seems rather meaningless for people like us.
The way his attitude drips of being pampered as though he were a prince causes me to furrow my brows. Subconsciously, Li Zeyan’s image surfaces in my mind.
Tumblr media
MC: Well, in that case, here’s to the everlasting prosperity of your family’s business… however, I’ve heard that nothing in this world remains unchanged forever.
The other party probably wasn’t expecting me to counter like this, causing the expression on his face to turn somewhat unpleasant.
Man: Why don’t we ask the talk of the town, the “new money” person, and whose viewpoint he stands by… Mr. Victor?
I nonchalantly turn my head and observe this rumored aviation tycoon from behind, involuntarily raising an eyebrow.
His slender physique is wrapped in a royal blue suit, complemented by a black and white polka dot tie around his neck. He stands out among the crowd of men, looking effortless yet debonair.
–– It’s the men’s fashion style I recommended in my articles. This person has actually read my column very carefully.
The corners of my lips can’t help but curl up slightly, watching that tall, straight figure turn around. But the instant I clearly see his visage, my lips part involuntarily.
With my heart beating like a drum, he walks to my side at a pace that is neither too fast nor too slow, bringing with him a subtle scent of sandalwood.
Tumblr media
LZY: Of course, I stand by her viewpoint.

【Chapter 4】
Tumblr media
My eyes widen, and my gaze sweeps across the face of the person in front of me without even a single blink.
Perhaps due to the Southern sunshine, his complexion seems a shade deeper compared to the last time we saw each other, but his facial contours appear to be even more pronounced.
The fringes that he used to groom in a “proper” manner have now been slicked back into the trendiest hairstyle of the moment, showcasing his deep-set eyes and prominently arched eyebrows.
A pair of thin-rimmed glasses rest halfway on the bridge of his nose, not quite settled, and he casually pushes them up with his finger pad.
Through the lenses, a glimmer of smile seems to be shining in those deep eyes… or perhaps revealing certain emotions that were veiled in the past, but now, at this moment, seem evident with greater clarity.
LZY: The cream is about to melt.
As Li Zeyan speaks, he effortlessly takes the wobbling cupcake from my hand.
His broad and slender hand, wrapped in a moon-white glove, extends to pass me a piece of handkerchief.
Casual and comfortable, as if it weren’t a reunion after so long of separation, but rather our everyday interaction from back when we were still together at home.
I suppress the indescribable mix of sourness and joy in my heart, watching as the man converses with the people around him before raising an eyebrow.
Man: Ah, so you’re so Miss MC’s gege? Well, I suppose that explains your biased comment.
LZY: I believe the words I said just now are sufficiently objective.
LZY: If I’m not mistaken, with the inauguration of transatlantic flight routes, the stocks of shipping companies dropped at least ten percent. Your family’s business should be no exception.
LZY: To be able to maintain such unwavering optimism even in the midst of all these… I must say, Mr. Arnott’s attitude is truly admirable.
The man’s countenance grows slightly more ashen, while Li Zeyan stands next to me, calmly raising his glass to the crowd.
Tumblr media
LZY: I rarely attend any social gatherings, so I haven’t formally announced it in a public setting. But six months ago, I had already disaffiliated myself from MC’s family.
LZY: And I’m not attending this banquet today in the identity of her “gege.”
I don’t know if it’s my illusion, but the tone of his latter statement seemed to have a slightly slower pace, triggering my heartbeat to accelerate uncontrollably.
Not as my “gege”… then, in what identity did he come? Perhaps, he knows about the news I’ve put out?
I clink my goblet glass with him, trying my hardest to maintain my usual casual expression, and lift my head slightly.
MC: I suppose I ought to be thanking you. After all, you’ve just returned, and here you are, immediately coming to my rescue.
Li Zeyan and I hold each other’s gazes for a brief moment. A subtle curve graces the corners of his lips as he also softens his voice.
Tumblr media
LZY: I was being sincere, though.
LZY: I haven’t missed a single column you’ve written in  《The New Yorker》.
A wave of warmth accompanies his words, traveling from my ears to the throbbing center in my chest.
I gaze into those familiar and serene eyes, gently tapping the tie hanging down from his neck.
MC: Well, in that case, allow this writer to make one more suggestion.
MC: If it were replaced with a corrugated pattern in the same color, it would complement your suit today even better.
Li Zeyan sets down the goblet glass in his hand on the long table.
LZY: I didn’t bring an extra tie. Can I leave it to your care?
MC: Of course, come with me.
As I speak, my hand that was initially reaching to grasp his palm pauses mid-motion, and in the end, I settle for only holding onto his cuff.
He and I walk through the clustered bouquets of flowers and the crowd of people in their fragrant clothes, making our way toward the upper floor of the hall in a manner that couldn’t be more familiar.
Eyes from all around fall upon our departing figures. I don’t know if these people noticed anything, but I don’t care either.
All I know is that from the moment of parting, the thought that I painstakingly disregarded for the longest time became gradually clear: I desire to be with him in an identity that goes beyond our familial ties.
Will he be angry? Or will he helplessly discourage my intentions? Or perhaps, in reality, he does harbor certain unspoken feelings towards me…
──────────
Tumblr media
Suppressing my tumultuous heartbeat, I close the door, and the chatter and music outside finally fade away.
The air falls silent for a moment. I let go of Li Zeyan’s cuff, turn around to rummage through the intricate accessories, and speak as if casually inquiring.
MC: Finally, I can breathe a sigh of relief… have you had a chance to meet Daddy yet?
LZY: [the muted joy in his tone HHHHH]  Yeah, I went to his room to say hello after coming back, and we talked for a long time.
MC: Ah, he must’ve been so delighted; after all, he reminisces about you every now and then. “If Zeyan were here…,” is a sentence he says more often than not.
I exaggeratedly mimic my father’s manner of speaking, and my eyes secretly fall on Li Zeyan, hoping to catch his expression.
MC: You said earlier, “not as my gege”... then, in what identity are you here?
Maintaining a brisk tone, I continue sifting through without pausing my movements, as if this will be able to cloak my erratic heartbeat.
Li Zeyan doesn’t answer my question, and his footsteps come to a stop behind me. Even though there is a somewhat elusive distance between us, I can almost feel his body heat.
Tumblr media
LZY: I’m not the one who can give that answer.
I turn around, somewhat puzzled, only to see a black, gold-plated box being extended towards me.
The huge ruby inside, set against the velvet backdrop, sparkles with a flash of dazzling brilliance.
MC: This…
LZY: A gift for you. A certain someone mentioned before that the quality of gemstones in New York isn’t good enough these days.
LZY: So, it was transported here on my company’s first transatlantic flight, all the way from Europe.
Li Zeyan removes the ruby from the box as he speaks, placing it in the palm of my hand.
The slight coolness of the gemstone accompanies the warmth of his fingertips, and I hear Li Zeyan speak in a soft tone.
LZY: Even the most impossible fantasies can become reality.
LZY: MC, as long as you say the word.
I’m utterly dazed, suddenly recalling the brief conversation we had under the stairs the night before Li Zeyan left.
From the past to the present, he has always borne the weight of all my wishes, even if I’ve only mentioned them in passing.
Tumblr media
The sound of my heartbeat drums against my ears. Without uttering a word, I simply tug on his tie and rise on tiptoes towards this man who used to be my “gege.”
The distance between us bridges bit by bit, my somewhat quivering breath fanning across Li Zeyan’s face.
He watches me in complete silence, his eyes burning. He seems to be waiting for some form of confirmation, yet he doesn’t evade my actions.
That is, until, a fleeting kiss lands on the edge of his lips, and we briefly exchange our warmth with each other. I pull back slightly, avert my eyes, and speak.
MC: …what if this is what I desire?
LZY: …
I don’t hear his response. In the next second, my waist is suddenly shackled in place.
A deep kiss, which has been held in check for a long time, finally descends, erasing the last vestige of distance.
Two sets of lips that have never touched each other before roll back and forth, their inexperienced and slightly shaky intertwining exchange breaths that have long been familiar but never explored so deeply.
In those eyes of his, I see emotions mirroring my own. Patiently restrained feelings, a fluttering heart… but now added with a touch of certainty.
Tumblr media
LZY: I’ve probably held onto this expectation for longer than you.
LZY: What I longed for has always been right there within sight… and you made it a reality for me.
The brilliant chandelier overhead leaves shimmering spots in the field of vision, leaving one slightly dizzy. It feels like a firework that has been brewing for a long time has finally burst forth.
Turns out, we both harbored the same feelings all along.
The eyes that turned to look back when we passed by each other, the hands that reached out to touch only to retract… all the entanglements and poignant emotions of the past gently dissipate in this moment.
I close my eyes and hear his voice resonate, but now carrying with it a deeper undertone of mirth than ever before.
Tumblr media
LZY: Allow this gem to be a commemoration of this special occasion.
LZY: For that first dance in a while, how about sharing it with me?
────────────────────────────────
[Tidbits]:
[2] so in love with this imagery here. “白月光” (white moonlight) in chinese means first love but it comes with the connotation of something “unattainable.” here, it’s the color of his gloves, the “barrier” between their hands truly touching~ 🤧
[3] “ruby” is a symbol of passion, protection, everlasting love-- indeed the perfect move for Li Zeyan to choose this stone as his ~betrothal gift~ 🥺
[4] welp, if it wasn’t clear already LOL, sharing the “first dance” at this banquet is their official announcement of their engagement~ 🤭🤧
